Only 1 kilometer from Ouarzazate, is a very old building, both superb and surprising. This is the Taourirt Kasbah, which is often compared to a large sand castle.
If it is now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is not for nothing. The Taourirt Kasbah is a real architectural gem of Berber culture. Built in the 17th century by the Glaoui tribe, it is made of straw and earth – which gives it the appearance of a large sand castle – but it is much less modest than it appears.
The Taourirt Kasbah has many ornaments. Its cedar wood ceilings are also often cited as they are so beautiful. The Taourirt Kasbah is also distinguished by its crenellated towers and its remarkable conservation.
The entrance to the Kasbah of Taourirt is chargeable (count 20 dhs per person) but the visits which are organized there from 8 am to 6.30 pm are well worth the detour. The interior decorations are not sumptuous and the rooms are not large, but the change of scenery is guaranteed.
